Systems Biology of Virus-Cell Interactions PDF Print E-mail

The major goal of ‘ViroQuant – Systems Biology of Virus – Host Cell Interactions’ is the comprehensive characterization of cellular networks that are responsible for the replication of viruses and their propagation in infected eukaryotic host cells.

ViroQuant represents a joint consortium of 31 research groups including 2 young investigator’s groups from the University of Heidelberg, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), and the European Molecular Biology Laboratories (EMBL). The research activities are concentrated in BioQuant, the ‘Centre for the Quantitative Analysis of Molecular and Cellular Biosystems’ at the University of Heidelberg. Here, ViroQuant members strongly benefit from the technology platforms established at BioQuant including the Nikon Imaging Centre and the Sun Centre of Excellence that contribute the most recent and sophisticated imaging equipment and computing hardware. Such a joint venture of non-profit research and industrial companies in Systems Biology was unique in Europe at the time of establishing BioQuant.

Within the ViroQuant consortium, scientists with different expertises work on the characterization of cellular networks that are responsible and/or essential for virus replication and propagation within their host cells. In particular, ViroQuant research projects focus on the pathogenic viruses’ human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Based on fully automated RNAi based cellular screens models of cellular networks for viral infection and replication is in progress. These cellular networks and signalling pathways play a critical role for the infection of eukaryotic human cells with HIV and HCV. A comprehensive understanding of a complete infection cycle of these viruses will open new perspectives for applications in the biomedical field and treatment of these viral infections.
